Day Trip to the Isle of Iona and Iona Abbey

Day 13, June 9.  This morning we headed out for a coastal walk from Tobermory, the "capital" of the Isle of Mull. Our three and a half mile hike began on an uphill stretch through the woods and along the coast with wonderful views of Tobermory for the first mile or so. Rhododendrons were in bloom adding colorful beauty along the footpath as well as fresh green ferns and moss and foliage everywhere. There were beautiful waterfalls before descending downhill to a lily loch, but because of the very late spring only hundreds of lily pads were visible and beautiful reflections of trees in the water. We only had to imagine how pretty it would be in another week or two. Besides the rhodies in bloom we saw some brilliant yellow Scotch broom. The path along the loch ended about there and we then scrambled uphill again and continued on our circular walk back to Tobermory enjoying the same super views of Tobermory, fish farms, a small cruise boat, and pretty views of Calve Island and the surrounding mountains. Back to Aros Mains in Salen, this week's home-away-from-home, for lunch. Then off for a relaxing afternoon poking about in Tobermory.
